West Ashley Today
The community of West Ashley refers to the area just west of the peninsula of Charleston. It is bordered by both the Ashley River and the Intracoastal Waterway.
These waterways provide a playground for all of Charleston to enjoy. As the oldest suburb of Charleston, West Ashley offers a variety of architecture. New sprawling neighborhoods with golf courses, tennis courts and swimming pools are often appealing to young families looking for plenty of outdoor activities. The brick bungalows found in Byrnes Down & Old Windermere are highly desirable for buyers looking for early 20th century charm and character within their home and their neighborhood. Traveling from West Ashley to other parts of the county is quite easy as this area provides direct access to Charleston proper, I-26 and 526. Convenience, shopping malls, both private & public schools, great restaurants and a 10.5 mile bike path make West Ashley very popular with Charlestonians both new and old!

West Ashley’s Past Seen Today
In 1670 English colonists landed and what is now called Charles Towne Landing State Historic Park. They established the first permanent English settlement in the Carolinas. Even today visitors of the park enjoy the nature trails, the animal zoo filled with species indigenous to the Charleston area, a life size reproduction of a 17th century trading vessel as well as learning the trades and crafts of the times.
Also found West of the Ashley are three historic plantation houses. Each offers something special for visitors. Drayton Hall is the South’s oldest surviving example of Georgian-Palladian architecture. The house is being preserved at it ages and is very much the same today as it was when it was completed in 1742. Magnolia Plantation offers the oldest garden in America circa 1680. Magnolia is the oldest man made attraction in the US. Middleton Place was the home of the President of the First Continental Congress, Henry Middleton. All three are very special and Charleston is proud to call them her own.
